It’s 2016, our guess is that most of you have a smartphone. Being smartphone owners ourselves, we’re always interested in knowing when a smartphone gets updated. Wouldn’t it be convenient to have this all in one place? That’s why we created our ‘Droid Updates’ Weekly Series.

Once per week, we’ll give you a list of notable Android devices that received updates over the course of seven days. This can be anything from a minor carrier update, a security patch update, or a major system overhaul like Android N. We’ll give you an idea of when to expect the update as well as what’s new in that particular update. Access our ‘Droid Updates’ Weekly Series from the main menu or search “Droid Updates.”

Samsung pushes August security patch update to the Galaxy S6 Edge

samsung_galaxy_blue_logo_fitter

Like Google and others, Samsung pushes monthly updates over-the-air to some of its smartphones and tablets. This monthly update includes security patches, keeping you prone from viruses. The update itself is a small package and makes no changes to the look or feel of your device, nor does it reset your device. The update is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend downloading and installing it as soon as you can for your own safety. This typically takes a week to reach all compatible devices. You can try triggering it by going into your device settings under ‘About’ and ‘check for new software updates.’

OnePlus has begun pushing an update to all OnePlus 3 units containing a variety of fixes. This update to OxygenOS will bring the handset up to version 3.2.4, which comes after version 3.2.2. The update has started rolling out over-the-air and brings a ton of fixes. Starting with the most important, OnePlus has fixed the auto-reboot issue reported by many in the previous software version. OnePlus also noted in their forums that users will experience superior call quality in this update over the last. The company also noted that they have made various fixes and carrier optimizations in this update, although they didn’t mention exactly what they are. The update itself comes in a medium-sized package that will rollout slowly. It’ll will make no changes to your personal settings, nor will it reset your device. Android 7.0 Nougat arrives on the Xperia X Performance via the Sony’s Xperia Beta Program

Sony_Xperia_X_Performance_colors

Sony extended its Xperia Beta Program this week to include the Xperia X Performance. If enrolled in the beta program, you’ll have the ability to test drive Google’s yet to be released Android 7.0 Nougat software. The one downside is that only select European countries are gaining this ability. Those in other parts of the world aren’t getting the opportunity. However, if you are located in one of the compatible countries, be sure to send feedback to Sony so that they can perfect the software for the public rollout. Once you enroll, you’ll be able to fully download and install the update over-the-air almost instantly like you would on a recently launched Nexus device. The update itself is a large package. Performance may lack and bugs may be present, so update at your own risk. For more details on what’s new and the list of compatible countries, hit the link below. More on details on what’s new in Android 7.0 Nougat can be seen here.

Samsung_Galaxy_Note_7_next_big_thing

It was a light week for Droid Updates, so I thought it would be nice to include this estimate for those of you looking into purchasing Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 7.

According to the Korea Times who spoke with Samsung, the soon to be released Galaxy Note 7 will be among the first to get Android 7.0 Nougat. The rough estimate by the company is two or three months from now, after much feedback is provided by beta testers. Below is the official statement made by Samsung’s President of Mobile, Dongjin Koh.

“It is very important for us to offer up-to-date information with the new OS, but what’s more crucial is to build a stable and seamless platform for users. That’s why we are planning to do enough beta testing before any OS updates.”

We’ll be sure to update you when the handset gets it along with instructions and all of what’s new. Just keep an eye out for future weekly Droid Updates.
