Netflix introduces new smart downloads feature

This week, Netflix took to its blog to announce a new feature coming to the video streaming platform. Smart Downloads doesn’t require the user to do anything, yet gets a specific job done. It’s not offered by the competition, giving Netflix the edge. Here’s what is coming.

Smart Downloads will kick on in the background while you watch a show on Netflix over Wi-Fi. It’ll come turned off by default, but while turned on, the app will, by itself, download the next episode of a particular show you’re watching. Netflix is able to recognize when you like a TV show, and so you don’t have to wait for the next episode to download and store on your mobile device, the app will know to download it while you’re watching the prior episode. This is pretty cool and could prove very convenient for those who get super addicted to a show. Once you’re done watching an episode, the app will also know to delete that one and free up your storage space.

When Smart Downloads does its thing, you’ll receive a notification on your phone as a reminder. The feature will save users a lot of time shall it work as advertised. The heavy lifting is done for you so you can sit back and watch your show without having to worry about what you’re doing next.

With people using their smartphones more now than ever, this feature for offline viewing makes all the sense. The update is rolling out to the app as we speak on Android phones and tablets. Once received on your device, you’ll be able to enable the function in settings. See the video below for how it works. If you don’t have it just yet, sit tight and it should arrive any day. Download the app at the link in brackets below or update your existing app from the Play Store. Let us know in the comments if you see the feature, and if so, your own thoughts.
