The popular social media app among today’s teenagers and young adults continues to yield not just updates, but feature updates. This week, Instagram has announced an update for the app that brings with it shopping functionality. Here’s how it’ll look and function.
Instagram has created the perfect match for those who can’t put down Instagram and also love to shop. Users will soon be able to do both from inside the Instagram app, available for Android and iOS. Brands are working with Instagram on a full-blown shopping experience directly in Instagram Stories. The feature won’t be appreciated by everyone and is a work in progress right now, but you should give it a try.
Product items will be tagged in story images so they won’t be taking up a whole section like Facebook’s marketplace. Tapping on a shopping icon that’ll act as a link will bring the user to the retailer’s website where they can read about the product or make a purchase in a few taps.
The functionality is rolling out slowly, but will expand with time as more brands are approved to sell through the social network. Adidas, Aritzia, and Louis Vuitton are a few examples of supported brands starting things out for us. An app update is rolling out now with the feature. While the functionality isn’t new to the industry, it’s a simple way to shop that’s different and perhaps more engaging than the ways we’ve become most used to. In the comments, let us know if you’ve come across any of these sales while viewing an Instagram story.
