NVIDIA pauses Android 8.0 update roll out for SHIELD TV devices

Last week, NVIDIA began pushing a monster platform update out to SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro units. The update made up of Android 8.0 Oreo and a slew of NVIDIA-exclusive features in Experience Upgrade 7.0 has since been paused.

SHIELD TV owners were surprised and happy when they heard about last week’s news, but only a few were able to install the new update before it had been paused by NVIDIA for good reason. We’re not surprised given that these set-top boxes are really the only modern Android TV boxes at this point that were given the update.

NVIDIA was a bit quick to roll out this update to devices. We had a nervous feeling last week when we received the news, and while everything seemed to be okay for a little while, the process has now been halted temporarily. The reason according to NVIDIA, is because of some issues discovered in the software that need to be fixed. The company is now putting more work into the update as we speak.

NVIDIA will apply some changes to the update before resuming the update process. We don’t know when the resume will happen, but we can promise to keep you updated. If you see the update on your console, it’s probably best that you wait until given further notice. Maybe next time NVIDIA will consider a beta program to obtain feedback and carve out more issues before rushing to send out a super large update such as this one.
