Samsung DeX station revealed to enable Samsung Galaxy Desktop mode for the Galaxy S8

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is going to be officially announced next Wednesday at the Samsung Unpacked 2017 event. We have already seen many details of the next generation Galaxy S flagship model including images, videos and specifications, and one such feature is the desktop mode. Now thanks to a leak, we have seen the desktop dock.

This device will enable a desktop mode for the Galaxy S8 smartphone supposedly by allowing it to connect to a number of peripherals including a monitor, keyboard and mouse. This is the Samsung DeX Station.

In the detail, the Samsung DeX Station enables the ‘Samsung Galaxy Desktop’ feature, which adjusts how Grace UX and Android Nougat in the Galaxy S8 is to work. The interface and how it works will reportedly be adjusted for the bigger screen, which may be connected to via the included HDMI or USB Type-C ports. When working in Samsung Galaxy Desktop mode, the device can have several application windows open at the same time as the Samsung DeX Station supports a screen resolution of 3,840 by 2,160 pixels with a frame rate of 30fps. The DeX Station also includes a USB Type-C port, two USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, and active cooling. Samsung’s decision to incorporate a small cooling fan is presumably because the Galaxy S8 will be working hard when connected to the larger screen and likely mirrors Samsung’s rapid wireless charger docks, which are also actively cooled. The design of the Samsung DeX Station looks very much like a desktop stand but as you can see, it is more capable.

Samsung has included the more advanced power technology that is enabled using a USB Type-C connector. This means that a USB lead can be used to connect the DeX Station to an external monitor, where it will provide the display from the Galaxy S8 to the screen, but can also provide power from the monitor to the Galaxy S8 via the DeX Station. This technology should reduce the number of cables necessary to use the device! Finally, the Samsung DeX Station is also a foldable design too, meaning it can easily be slipped into a pocket or purse for portability. At the moment, the only pricing is for the European market, which is €149, or around $161, but we do not have the availability of the DeX Station. This information is sure to be revealed next week.

As for the Samsung Unpacked event, Samsung has produced a short advertising clip that subtly tells the world that the next device is an eighth generation Samsung Galaxy smartphone, which was Tweeted here (watch it below). There is already plenty of excitement about the new Samsung device, which was previewed at the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 launch during MWC 2017, and a lot of people will be watching the March 29th Unpacked event, and of course you will be able to watch it live here on Droid Turf.
