Essential is making it too easy for PH-1 owners to try Android 8.1 Oreo

Essential had a change in plans for Android Oreo. The company announced several Android 8.0 beta upgrades for its Essential Phone, but later decided to skip the update for Android 8.1. The first Android 8.1 beta was introduced last week, and now the company has come out with a new way to get it.

Google smartphone shipments improve two-fold during 2017, Essential moved just 90,000 units of PH-1

IDC analyst, Francisco Jeronimo, tweeted recently regarding Google and Essential smartphone shipments. According to Jeronimo, Pixel shipments were double that of last year thanks to sales of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The figure for Essential is very, very disappointing. It’s not often we hear sales figures for mobile devices, so we’ll take it for what it’s worth.

Three new colors revealed for Essential Phone

Last year saw the release of Andy Rubin’s Essential Phone. This was the Android co-founder’s latest brainchild released under his new hardware company, Essential. While there were unclear rumors regarding Rubin’s personal leave last November, it was good to know that he got back just two weeks after his departure. To most everyone’s surprise, we got something special yesterday following a minimal teaser.

First Essential Phone Android 8.1 beta update out now

Essential released three Android 8.0 Oreo betas for testing on the PH-1 smartphone in the last two months and appeared ready to release the public OTA. However, that all changed two weeks ago when the Andy Rubin company changed course.

The Android beta program was first introduced by Google, the maker of Android, with the purpose to eliminate bugs and absorb feedback of which can be used to improve software for its final release. Beta programs used to be limited to very few people, typically a randomly generated sample of testers, but not any more.
