Confirmed: Nexus 9 won’t get Vulkan support

As many of you probably know, one of the major additions new in Android Nougat is the Vulkan graphics API. This will drastically increase gaming performance of graphic intense games on the platform. Unfortunately, an Android Engineer confirmed the lack of Vulkan support on the Nexus 9.

Due to various reasons, the Nexus 9 won’t come with Vulkan support when Android Nougat arrives. The news was confirmed by an Android Engineer during a recent Android Nougat AMA on Reddit. The Android Engineer, Anwar Ghuloum, issued the following statement in regard to if the Nexus 9 would receive the graphics upgrade with the public release of Android 7.0 Nougat.

“N9 will not be getting Vulkan drivers, but Pixel C has had them since the second N Developer Preview.”

Most other Nexus devices including the Pixel C tablet, as mentioned above, the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X gained support in previous builds of the Android Nougat Developer Preview. We are patiently waiting for more reasoning behind this decision.
