Facebook Messenger has received a steady stream of updates over the past few months. If features like ‘Instant Video’ and mobile games haven’t convinced you to spend more time using the app then maybe a shiny new native camera with art and 3D special effects might just do the trick.
According to Facebook, messaging is quickly becoming more “visual” as over 2.5 billion emojis, stickers, photos, and videos are sent daily on Messenger. This was the inspiration for its new Messenger camera, which is rolling out globally over the next few days and brings creative new ways to exchange messages with friends.
The Messenger camera can be quickly accessed by pressing the shutter button that’s available when you open the app, as well as inside the conversation window. A single tap lets you snap a quick photo while a longer press brings up video recording.
The new 3D masks and special effects let you apply an artistic filter to your photos with several themes to choose from. In the spirit of the holidays, expect to see a lot of Santa hats, reindeer and snow.
Facebook has worked with several artists from around the world to offer new stickers, frames, masks, and effects for the Messenger camera. The palette button near the shutter brings up a blank canvas to add art and stickers to your messages.Facebook’s Messenger app is already a wildly successful messaging app and the new camera is sure to keep its one billion plus users actively engaged with its customization options. The latest update is a fresh challenge to rival apps such as Snapchat which first brought the crazy and colorful aspects of messaging to the mainstream, and Google’s Allo, which has been struggling to gain momentum. It’s going to be interesting to see how the competition responds.
