Instagram will let users mute followed accounts in a future update

Get ready for yet another Instagram update. The social media company is preparing a new software feature that will allow users to mute accounts they follow. The update said to improve the overall app experience will arrive “in the coming weeks” on presumably Android and iOS. Here’s what to expect.

After announcing a new media upload feature and more, Instagram has other ideas. The new feature will be particularly useful shall you need to follow someone who is constantly filling up your feed with posts. Instagram believes this will be the best solution to stop this account’s posts from overtaking your feed, without them finding out. And since you’re still following them, you can access their profile as normal and continue to be notified if they tag you. Plus, you can always unmute somebody by going to their profile page. There will be no limit on the number of accounts you can mute or the number of times you mute and unmute someone you follow. Pretty nice!

The setting will become available to everyone with a future update and appear in the menu accessible by tapping on the three dot icon that appears in the corner of every post. You can mute posts, stories, or both. This feature is similar to Facebook Messenger’s mute feature, except you’re muting posts from appearing in your feed as opposed to incoming messages. This probably should have been an option in the app a lot sooner. However, it’s great to know that the feature is just a few weeks out from reaching our devices.
