Motorola did not make a show at MWC 2018, but said new smartphones would be introduced in April in a report with a shift in strategic management. We know of a number of rumored models, and now it appears that some are inching closer toward an official announcement that could be any day now.
Motorola is struggling to reel in profits from their mobile division despite having good offerings. For 2018, the company is restructuring itself to conserve costs and perform better. A slightly upgraded mid-range Moto G5S lineup composed of Moto G6, Moto G6 Plus and Moto G6 Play could be the first smartphones from the Lenovo brand this year. The trio looks to have been put up for sale mistakenly on a foreign retail site, but long enough for sources to take notice. Here’s what we now know about the upcoming models in terms of their specifications.
As stated by sources, all three Moto G6 models will have a bigger display. Though, the exact dimensions vary by handset as has been the case in the past. All contain Android 8.0 Oreo and the new 18:9 aspect ratio, meaning that the devices will be taller and narrower than previous iterations that had 16:9. These would be Motorola’s first to sport the new ratio, putting them among the very few in the mid-range category to adopt the screen trend. On the software side, things are mostly similar with Oreo, but hardware should vary in design and also in internals.
Moto G6 Plus is expected to have a larger 5.93-inch Full HD+ panel. It could be powered by a Snapdragon 630 chipset providing up to 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (with microSD expansion). This model could also come with a 12MP / 5MP rear camera combination as well as a 16MP front camera. Other specs may include Bluetooth 5.0 and a 3,200mAh battery with TurboPower fast charging. Moto G6 Plus also has a home button with an embedded fingerprint sensor, so there’s nothing fancy here.
Moto G6 has a 3D glass back for design and a 5.7-inch Full HD+ display. It’s expected to carry a lower-end 1.8GHz Snapdragon 450 processor with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage (with microSD card expansion). The camera will be the same as the Moto G6 Plus on both front and back, and other specifications will include Bluetooth 4.2 and a 3,000mAh battery with Turbo Power fast charging. Moto G6 also has a home button with a fingerprint scanner, making it one of few that could stick with a physical home key.
The third budget phone, Moto G6 Play, comes in at 5.7-inches measured diagonally with an HD+ resolution of 1440 by 720 pixels. It could have a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 430, up to 3GB of RAM depending on the storage model (said to start at 32GB), and microSD slot. The cameras are a downgrade from the other two models at 5MP on the front and a single 12MP sensor on back. But, there’s a massive 4,000mAh battery cell inside that should last more than a day on one charge. In regards to the fingerprint scanner, Moto G6 Play has it on the rear as part of the signature dimple.
AThe Moto G6 family could be announced any day now alongside a new Moto X5 and others, but no Motorola flagship seems to be ready just yet. As we await the devices more upper mid-range devices, Motorola is trying to clear shelf space with all kinds of deals, meaning that the phones are probably close. We’ll be able to confirm all specs for you soon. Stay tuned!
