CES 2017 is well underway now in the city of Las Vegas, Nevada. Things have been quiet of late for Android TV. However, customers will soon have a new option aside Google’s Nexus Player, Xiaomi’s Mi Box, and NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV. Dish recently announced AirTV, a 4K Android TV box with Sling TV and Netflix pre-installed.
In the past, tens of people have complained about the lack of a universal search feature for Android TV. Those complaining will now stop, because Google has gone back to work to implement such a feature.
Google has pushed an update to its Movies and TV app for Android TV. With it comes simple playback controls, captions and a new tile design.
Microsoft tends to keep to its own operating system, but Windows Phone isn’t exactly widespread like Google’s Android OS. In an attempt to widen its audience, a report suggests Microsoft could soon debut its own Movies and TV service on Android smartphones.
In May, NVIDIA was quick to roll out Android 8.0 for SHIELD TV devices. The update may have been a bit premature, since the company was forced to pull it before all devices received the upgraded software. We learned that there was a bug, which is usually the case when things like this happen. The good news is that the halt was temporary and NVIDIA has patched the issue in order to resume the roll out process this week.
Last week, NVIDIA began pushing a monster platform update out to SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro units. The update made up of Android 8.0 Oreo and a slew of NVIDIA-exclusive features in Experience Upgrade 7.0 has since been paused.
Last week, NVIDIA rolled out updates for both the SHIELD TV and SHIELD TV Pro. It has been quite the wait, but owners of either device will be very glad to know that Android 8.0 can now be installed on these devices including a handful of interface changes and upgrades.
Plex has been beta testing two upcoming features, Live TV and DVR support, for a few weeks now. However, the company mentioned no such release as to when the new features would become part of the publicly available version of the video service. Last week, the company finally began pushing these new features and to nearly all Plex customers.
