T-Mobile REVVL is available from today

T-Mobile, America’s third largest national carrier, told the world that it would be releasing a series of own-brand smartphones some months back. Now, the Uncarrier has unveiled more details about the new range of REVVL smartphones.

This first model in the range is simply called the T-Mobile REVVL and is described by T-Mobile as being “a brand new feature-packed phone designed specifically for T-Mobile customers,” which launches Thursday, August 10. In their opinion, the REVVL offers customers the best feature-set for the money and has been custom-designed with T-Mobile customers in mind. T-Mobile’s blog on the subject explains that their customers use 58% more data than Verizon customers. However, T-Mobile’s statistics show that their customers use three times the amount of data on social networks compared with other carriers. Furthermore, their customers upgrade their handsets 16% more often than the average wireless customer. Perhaps more importantly, not everybody is able or wants to spend $800+ on a new smartphone.

The T-Mobile REVVL is available on T-Mobile’s JUMP! plan for $0 down and just $5 a month. This could equate to only $125 for the device without a plan. This might sound too good to be true, so before you get too excited about it, we should take a look at the device specifications, right?

For your $5 a month the device comes with a 5.5-inch HD display panel, a quad-core MediaTek MT6738 chipset, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage (plus a microSD card that can take cards of up to 128GB), a 13MP rear camera plus a 5MP front-facing camera, a fingerprint sensor, and a 3,000mAh battery. It’s powered by Android Nougat. These specifications are respectable for the money: this is no Android powerhouse, but for the typical smartphone user, the T-Mobile REVVL should work out just fine. The weakest entry is probably the 2GB of RAM, as heavy multitaskers may find the phone less responsive with a dozen or more running applications at a time.

In addition to announcing the T-Mobile REVVL for sale, T-Mobile also introduced ‘Smartpicks,’ which consists of a number of handsets selected from well-known brands to be available at very low rates on T-Mobile’s JUMP! On Demand plans. The JUMP! plans were reserved for high-end (and expensive) devices, but the new Smartpicks are available from $0 down and $5 a month. Typical prices are $7 a month for the Samsung Galaxy J3 Prime and LG Aristo, rising to just $8 a month for the LG K20 Plus and ZTE ZMAX Pro.

T-Mobile’s blog explains that the T-Mobile REVVL is the first in the family and we have read rumors of an even cheaper device, perhaps called the ‘Alchemy,’ that appears to be coming.
