Weekly Recap: Here are all the major headlines from the week 8/7 – 8/11

The Droid Turf Weekly Recap includes all the major headlines in the Android Ecosystem over the recent week.

The Droid Turf Overview Series complies three different sets of summaries, Daily Roundups, Weekly Recaps, and Monthly Rundowns. Daily Roundups will include the major takeaways from the day, and will be posted in the late evening hours in EST. Video service Plex adds live TV and DVR support

Video streaming service, Plex, has added two new features to the Android app. The first of these is live TV, which as the name suggests allows those customers who have paid the subscription, to view live TV on compatible devices. The DVR feature goes hand in hand with the TV streaming as it allows customers to record something for future offline viewing. As part of this service, customers may pause, rewind and fast forward the show they’re watching. [Read More]

AT&T and Samsung unveil new Samsung Galaxy S8 Active

AT&T and Samsung unveiled the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active this week, which is an AT&T exclusive for now. The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active has similar specifications to the standard Samsung Galaxy S8 apart from a larger 4,000mAh battery and a reinforced chassis, which is water, dust and shock resistant. The Galaxy S8 Active has a retail price of $849 on AT&T’s website and is available now. [Read More]

OnePlus announces OnePlus 5 in Soft Gold, quantity is limited 

The OnePlus 5 is OnePlus’ most expensive and advanced handset yet. It was released at the end of June to compete alongside more expensive Android flagships. Up until now, the handset has come in choice of two colors, Midnight Black and Slate Grey, and two variants, a 6GB RAM with 64GB storage variant, and an 8GB RAM 128GB storage model. This week, OnePlus announced a limited edition OnePlus 5 coated in Soft Gold, with a White front. The Soft Gold model is only being sold with 6GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage model, for $479. Google’s August Android distribution data shows more handsets are gaining Android Nougat

Google has released Android distribution data as of the start of August. It has been almost a year since Android 7.0 Nougat first arrived, which has been followed by both Android 7.1.1 and Android 7.1.2. Today, only 13.5% of devices are running some version of Android Nougat, and Android ‘O’ is right around the corner. Manufacturers have been slow to upgrade older models to the newer version of Android, right at a time when Google is dismantling parts of the operating system to accelerate future software updates. LG starts teasing the LG V30

One South Korean Electronics giant has teased that it is to unveil the LG V30 at the end of August. The LG V30 is expected to represent a mix of the previous LG V20 and LG G6, although LG may replace the additional display that was present on last year’s LG V20 with a new floating bar. LG’s presentation is happening on Thursday, August 31 in the city of Berlin. Hopefully, the conglomerate has something innovative and useful to show off, as sales of the latest LG G6 have lacked luster. [Read More]

BLU smartphones are back on sale at Amazon

BLU has good news: their smartphones are back on sale at Amazon. The devices were removed from sale last week following the announcement that some BLU devices were sending information to offshore servers. BLU explained that their devices were doing nothing wrong, Amazon accepted this response, and now customers can buy BLU phones once again. [Read More]

T-Mobile announces new T-Mobile REVVL smartphone, available for $5 a month

T-Mobile is bringing back the own-brand smartphone with the release of the T-Mobile REVVL, a 5.5-inch, quad-core smartphone packing a 3,000mAh battery, a 13MP main camera, Android Nougat, and a low price of $5 per month. T-Mobile explained on Thursday that the new T-Mobile REVVL offers the best value for your money. We’ll have to test one out to know for sure! [Read More]

Moto Z2 Force, 360 Camera Mod now available for purchase, Moto Gamepad Mod goes up for pre-order

The Moto Z2 Force and 360 Camera Mod that were announced at Hello Moto World last month are now available for purchase in the US. All pre-orders are shipping now. The Moto Gamepad Mod is now up for pre-order at Verizon for $299, and the JBL SoundBoost 2 Mod can be purchased today from Motorola or Verizon at $79. Moto Gamepad Mods will ship starting August 25 once units are made available to the masses. [Read More]
