Once per week, we’ll give you a list of notable Android devices that received updates over the course of seven days. This can be anything from a minor carrier update, a security patch update, or a major system overhaul like Android N. The Android 6.0 update brings your Android device up to Marshmallow, Google’s Android M software OS that debuted in the fall of 2015. The update is a major overhaul that brings design changes and a bevy of new features. The update may also include changes made by the manufacturer and/or carrier that change the appearance and add or remove features. Some of the major additions from Google include doze mode, which improves upon battery standby time, Now On Tap for contextual awareness, and simplified app permissions to keep you organized and fully in control over what apps can and can’t access. Please note that since this is Android 6.0, and not the later-released Android 6.0.1 software, your phone may have experience some bugs. The update itself is a large package, but will make no changes to your personal settings, nor will it reset your device. The update is not mandatory, but we strongly recommend downloading and installing it as apps may no longer support the older version for your device as time proceeds. Verizon DROID Turbo 2 receives minor software update
Verizon pushed an update to DROID Turbo 2 units this week carrying important charging fixes. The update has started rolling out over-the-air and appears as SU1.75B: 24.14.16. Most are reported to have gotten it already, but there’s still a possibility it hasn’t reached you yet. The update itself comes in a rather small package. It’ll will make no changes to your personal settings, nor will it reset your device. Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge get firmware update on T-Mobile
T-Mobile began rolling out an update to both Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge units early on Wednesday. The firmware update is being sent out over-the-air. The Galaxy S6’s new software version is G920TUVU4EPF1, and the Galaxy S6 Edge’s new software version is G925TUVU4EPF1. New is an anti-theft update along with the security patches for the month of June (never too late). Also fixed are several bugs and issues associated with the previous build. The update itself comes in a rather small package of around 250MB in size. It’ll make no changes to your personal settings, nor will it reset your device. Users are reportedly getting it now. NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV set-top box updated to version 3.2
NVIDIA just sent out a big update to its SHIELD Android TV-powered set-top box. The latest version is 3.2, and it brings a bag full of new goodies. At the very top of the list is Netflix in HDR. This takes advantage of HDR filled TV’s to create an even better video watching experience adjusting automatically to your surrounding conditions. This is the first set-top box to gain this functionality, however, note that certain hardware is needed. Up next is buttery smooth YouTube video, which can now be displayed in 4k resolution up to 60fps if you have the right hardware. This is also a first for set-top boxes. In addition to these two features, the update includes PLEX Media Server built right in. This allows you to stream personal content stored on your SHIELD TV on the go using a mobile device. Cooler seen than said. Also coming with the update is a list of supported programs that can take advantage of Dolby Atmos, which is surround sound audio. The list includes VUDU, MX Player, SPMC, and other pre-installed apps like the standard video player. The newly launched universal search feature has also been added with the update along some advanced new features, additional apps/games, the latest monthly security patches, and a few other enhancements including improved video playback.
